Section H
Licensing Glossary
Plain-language definitions of every term a producer needs to know. Search below to find any term instantly.

Broadcast WAV (BWF)
An extension of the standard WAV file format that supports embedded metadata including description, originator, and ISRC fields. The professional standard for audio file metadata embedding in broadcast and post-production environments.
Catalog
The complete collection of tracks a producer has available for licensing. In the context of this ebook, a catalog is a business asset managed strategically across multiple platforms to generate ongoing passive income.
Content ID
YouTube's automated copyright detection system. It identifies audio fingerprints in uploaded videos and can automatically claim, monetize, or block content that matches registered recordings. A track with an ISRC code registered in Content ID can trigger claims on buyers who legitimately license and use that track on YouTube.
Deliverable Suite
The complete set of audio versions prepared for a single track: Full Mix, 60 Second Edit, 30 Second Stinger, 15–20 Second Sting, Loopable Version, Underscore Version, and Stems. Each version serves a different buyer need and creates a separate discovery and licensing opportunity.
Exclusive License
A licensing arrangement in which one buyer or platform holds the sole right to use a track for the duration of the agreement. No other party may license the track during that period.
ISRC Code
International Standard Recording Code. A unique twelve-character identifier assigned to a specific sound recording by a distributor, label, or PRO. Used by platforms including YouTube's Content ID to identify recordings. Tracks with embedded ISRC codes should not be submitted to stock licensing platforms without resolving the Content ID conflict first.
LUFS
Loudness Units relative to Full Scale. The measurement standard for integrated loudness in audio mastering. The target range for stock and sync music submissions is −14 to −16 LUFS integrated. This ensures adequate headroom for buyers who need to add dialogue, narration, or sound effects on top of the music.
Master Metadata Template
A spreadsheet that captures every metadata field for every track and every version in a producer's catalog. Used to prepare metadata before upload sessions so information is copied and pasted rather than written from scratch on each platform.
Metadata
The collection of descriptive information attached to an audio file or platform listing that tells search algorithms and buyers what the music is, what it sounds like, and what it is suitable for. Includes title, description, tags, BPM, key, mood, instrumentation, and use-case fields.
Music Supervisor
A professional who selects and licenses music for use in film, television, advertising, and other media. Music supervisors work with both exclusive and non-exclusive licensing arrangements and are the primary buyers on platforms like Syncly and Musicbed.
Non-Exclusive License
A licensing arrangement in which a buyer receives the right to use a track for a specific project while the rights owner retains full ownership and the ability to license the same track to unlimited other buyers simultaneously across unlimited platforms.
Performing Rights Organization (PRO)
An organization such as ASCAP, BMI, or SESAC that collects and distributes performance royalties to songwriters and publishers when their music is performed publicly, broadcast, or streamed. Registering your tracks with a PRO is essential for collecting royalties from broadcast and streaming use.
Rights-Managed License
A licensing model in which the fee is calculated based on specific usage parameters including medium, territory, duration, and scale of distribution. More complex than non-exclusive licensing but capable of generating significantly higher per-use fees.
Royalty
A payment made to a rights holder each time their music is licensed, used, or performed. In non-exclusive stock licensing, royalties are typically paid as a percentage of each license sale. In subscription-model platforms like Musicbed, royalties are calculated based on subscriber use.
Stems
Individual or grouped audio elements of a track exported as separate files. Typical groupings include drums and percussion, bass, harmonic elements, melodic elements, and FX layers. Stems give buyers the ability to adjust the balance of elements for their specific project needs.
Sync License
A license that grants the right to use a piece of music synchronized with visual media ? film, television, advertising, online video, or video games. Sync licensing is one of the most lucrative forms of music licensing and is the primary focus of platforms like Syncly and Musicbed.
Sync-Ready
A term describing a track that meets the production, mix, and format standards required for licensing use in professional visual media. A sync-ready track can be placed directly into a buyer's project without requiring additional production work.
True Peak
The maximum peak level of an audio signal including inter-sample peaks that occur during digital-to-analog conversion. The standard true peak limit for stock and sync submissions is −1 dBTP, applied using a true peak limiter on the master bus during mastering.
Underscore
A version of a track with the lead melody removed, designed to sit cleanly beneath dialogue, narration, or voiceover without competing for attention. Underscore versions are among the highest-value deliverables on editorial and sync-focused platforms.
Upload Tracker
A spreadsheet that captures the submission status of every track across all four platforms. Status options include Live, Pending Review, Not Submitted, and Rejected. Reviewed at the start of every upload session to identify incomplete submissions and action items.
Section D
Stem Organizer
Drop your stem files in, arrange them at 0:00 on the timeline, label each track, and export the complete stem package to your catalog folder.

How stems are submitted
All stems start at 0:00 on the timeline so they lock together perfectly when a buyer imports them into their DAW. Each stem is a separate audio file ? drums, bass, harmony, melody, FX ? exported at the same sample rate and length as your full mix. This organizer lets you verify the package before it leaves your session.
